FAQs

Q1: What is a submersible utility pump used for?

A submersible utility pump is designed to remove unwanted water from areas where it collects, such as basements after heavy rain, pool covers, flooded gardens, or window wells.
It quickly removes standing water much faster than manual methods like buckets or mops.

Q2: What is the difference between automatic and manual operation?
  • Smart Sensor (Automatic) models use a built-in water level sensor to automatically turn the pump on and off based on water height, making them ideal for unexpected water buildup.
  • Manual (Plug-and-Play) models start pumping immediately when plugged in and are best for controlled, on-demand water removal.
  • Float Switch (Traditional Automatic) models use a mechanical float that rises and falls with water levels to control operation in sump-type installations.
Q3: Why is my pump running but not moving water?

This usually happens when air is trapped inside the pump (airlock), the intake is blocked, the hose is kinked, or the water level is too low.
All three Cleartide submersible pump models include an air-release structure that helps reduce air buildup and restores normal water flow more quickly.

Q4: How does automatic water level control work?
  • Smart Sensor models use an electronic probe that detects water levels and automatically starts or stops the pump with precision.
  • Float Switch models rely on a mechanical float that moves with the water level to trigger operation.
  • Manual (Plug-and-Play) models do not include automatic sensing and must be turned on manually.
Q5: Can the pump handle dirty water or debris?

Our submersible pumps are designed for light to moderate debris such as rainwater, pool water, or pond water with small particles.
Depending on the model, it can handle solids up to 1/8 in or 3/8 in, helping reduce clogging and match different water conditions.
It is not intended for heavy sludge, mud, or large solid waste.

Q6: Can the pump run safely without supervision?

Yes. Smart Sensor and Float Switch models are designed for automatic operation and can run without constant monitoring when properly installed.
Built-in protection features help ensure safe operation, including:
- Dry-run protection to prevent damage when water is low
- Overload protection to reduce motor strain
- Overheat protection for extended use conditions
